Hunters in the Snow Free Essays

Mikael Habtezion Mrs. Walker English 1B 5 July 2011 A Snowy Haven A local brimming with eyes viewing with critical contemplations focused on you. Tattle behind each corner, assessing all that you do, staying away from any contact with somebody so reprobate. We will compose a custom article test on Trackers in the Snow or on the other hand any comparative subject just for you Request Now Nobody wishes to be in such a forlorn and alienated state. That’s why everybody endeavors to disguise each irksome and humiliating issue in their lives, appearing to the world as an effortless, bright, and energetic individual. In the short story â€Å"Hunters in the Snow† by Tobias Wolf this demonstration of covering a person’s internal and genuine self so as to stay away from judgment happens among the principle characters. There are three men who go on a chasing trip: Kenney, Frank, and Tub. As they get themselves incapable to discover deer to chase, Tub shoots Kenney in dread of being shot himself since Kenney was taking steps to shoot him first. The trackers reason among themselves that they need to drive him to the medical clinic themselves, yet in transit Tub and Frank stop to heat up at bars a couple of times. In this story we discover that Tub professes to have issues with his organs, which is the reason he is overweight, and we obtain some much needed education that Frank is concealing something about his own life in a discussion with Kenney. All through the story, these characters are constantly secured with white day off, as the title proposes. Emblematically, white is a shade of virtue and guiltlessness; all through the story, Frank and Tub appear to be more honest than their actual selves would really permit. Not until the end when they go into the bar to heat up and the snow â€Å"melts† off, are their real characters and their privileged insights uncovered. In â€Å"Hunters in the Snow† Wolf astutely utilizes snow as a similitude to cover Frank and Tub’s individual issues. In this short story, Frank’s individual issues are discharged through the similitude of day off. The peruser realizes that he has a family: a caring spouse and children. All through the story the writer uncovered nothing about Frank that would make the peruser judge him in any capacity. In any case, one thing is raised about a â€Å"certain babysitter† however insufficient proof is provided so as to pass judgment on him yet (622). During the story, Frank was driving â€Å"with the now blowing in his face† (629). At the point when Wolf says this, he explains to the perceptive peruser that the snow is covering him. The white snow is lighting up his outward appearance, and thus, letting his internal appearance blur away. After their companion Kenney gets shot, they drive him to the medical clinic. They creator shows them as old buddies now. On the excursion, Frank contends that they need to stop at a bar in light of the fact that â€Å"if [him] and Tub don’t get ready [they’re] going to freeze solid† (631). By saying this Wolf reinforces his similitude as he puts more snow on him. At the point when they show up at the bar Frank requests espresso and he â€Å"craddl[es] the steaming cup in his grasp. His skin was bone white† (631). Right now, Wolf is setting the bogus personality close what exactly uncovers it. He puts the entryway close to the key; this key will open the privileged insights which lay behind that entryway. Wolf shows how white Frank is and how guiltless he looks, yet in addition in an equal way he shows the steaming espresso, which can truly soften that snow away and allegorically â€Å"melt† his bogus character away. Directly after the softening starts to occur, Frank’s inward privileged insights become uncovered. Forthcoming trusts in Tub as he uncovered that â€Å"[he] thinks [he’s] going to leave Nancy, [his wife]† (631). Tub attempts to discover a purpose behind this and gets inquisitive if Nancy has been having an illicit relationship. Be that as it may, Wolf totally removes Frank’s sanctuary of honesty by clarifying that â€Å"Nancy hasn’t been running around†¦[Frank] has† despite the fact that â€Å"[s]he’s been accursed acceptable to [him] all these years† (632). By saying this, Frank’s asylum underneath the snow’s guiltlessness is lost, and he turns into an objective for judgment by the peruser. Subsequent to heating up and letting the snow soften off, it is disclosed that Frank has lost the virtue he once had in the reader’s eyes and has gone as far as a lower level of regard. After he admits himself to Tub, â€Å"[t]he snow fall helped and the mists started to move chill out the fields† (633). At the point when this is expressed, the representation of the snow as a shelter which covered up Frank’s insider facts starts to blur away since his mystery is made known to the peruser. In addition to the fact that Frank uses snow to conceal himself and give off an impression of being guiltless, however Tub does also. As his moniker recommends, Tub is overweight. At the point when the three companions were chasing and took a break, everybody drew out their own satisfying food, with the exception of Tub. At the point when they ate, â€Å"Tub put out one hardboiled egg and a stick of celery† and when his companions thought about how he can eat like this yet at the same time be putting on weight, Tub guarded himself by saying, â€Å"’What am I expected to do?†¦ It’s my glands’† (623). Be that as it may, prior when he was getting gotten by Kenney and Frank to go chasing, â€Å"a sandwich dropped out of his pocket† then â€Å"[h]e got his sandwiches and cookies† (621). The peruser is given a thought that something is fishy and it very well may be seen that there is a whole other world to the story than meets the eye, yet we are not given enough data to pass judgment on Tub yet. At the point when Frank and Tub were attempting to help Kenney into the rear of the truck after he was shot, Tub accidently dropped him. Forthright got disappointed and announced, â€Å"You fat moron†¦ You aren’t useful for diddly† (629). After this occurrence, Wolf pushes the peruser to feel for Tub in his season of being isulted and along these lines Wolf cunningly causes the recently stimulated doubts to vanish. After they get Kenney in the truck, and they hit the street, â€Å"the snow was moving white divider before their lights; it twirled into the taxi through the gap in the windshield and chose them† (630). Wolf continues with his representation and safe houses Tub’s internal personality and insider facts with this white snow that shows virtue. On their way to the emergency clinic, Frank and Tub stop again to heat up. They utilized â€Å"an programmed hand dryer in the washroom and they alternated remaining before it†¦letting the stream of scribble air inhale over their appearances and chests† (633). This becomes Tub’s edge to allowing his privileged insights to secrets. Much the same as Frank, Tub’s day off light start to liquefy away and his own and humiliating issues become obvious. Tub plunks down with Frank and tosses his covered issues away from any confining influence for revelation. Tub concedes that â€Å"’when [he] said that regarding [his] organs, that wasn’t valid. The fact of the matter is [he] scoops it in’† (634). With this, Tub is totally surrendered of his ivoryâ tower and his mystery is uncovered. Tub turns into an objective for judgment, much the same as Frank, for the peruser. As the exposition has delineated, snow is utilized as an analogy by Wolf so as to conceal the genuine personalities and internal privileged insights of Frank and Tub. At the point when the snow liquefies off of these trackers, their skin is uncovered and in like manner their internal insider facts rise to the top and become subject to judgment. Ordinary individuals become subject to judgment by society for huge slip-ups, for example, taking part in an extramarital entanglements to little ones, for example, stepping on someone’s toe. It is practically inconceivable not to be decided here and there by society, similarly as it is practically unimaginable not to pass judgment on others. We will in general gander at individuals as though we are better than them without thinking about our own condition. For instance, an individual shouldn’t blame a neighbor for having a messy floor, when their own rug is filthy with multiple times the earth. As time passes by ideally we can look past the shortcomings of our kindred individuals, and acknowledge that we are people and have our own flaws and should not be taking the move of â€Å"judge† when it is superfluous. At that point would we be able to live in a world without the dread of being our actual self; at that point we can dynamically deal with our own issues and endeavor to turn out to be increasingly improved and upstanding individuals. Essay On Aspects Of Narrative Or Documentary Form Essay

Essay On Aspects Of Narrative Or Documentary Form Essay Essay On Aspects Of Narrative Or Documentary Form â€" Essay Example > Introduction. This paper will focus on an evaluation of the documentary series Modern Marvels. The documentary series was pulled from VIDEO. AOL. COM and was released in 2006. This documentary series episode was played on The History Channel and can be viewed in its archives or on VIDEO. AOL. COM. The approach to evaluating this documentary included viewing the episode several times, noting specifics on textual form and organization and overall form and dynamic. A specific aspect of the documentary was chosen and the effects it produced were noted. The intended outcome of this examination is a clear understanding of how Modern Marvels successfully conveys its message. What follows is a detailed essay of the evaluation. 2. Form and Function. The function of the Modern Marvels episodes are to educate and entertain an audience who are mostly history buffs. This documentary series is shown primarily on The History Channel but is also shown on the Arts and Entertainment Channel (A E) a nd is viewed by students through The History Channel’s History in the Classroom series. The episode is fast paced both musically and pictorially. It is designed to keep the watcher’s attention from beginning to end. There are no dead spaces in the episodes that leave the viewer lost. The Documentary series “Modern Marvels” produces programs about the history of different commonplace items or tools (or toys) that are present in everyday life that have their origins in history and how they evolved. The show in the series studied presented the history of modern day surfing, development of video games, sword forging, backyard observatory (boys-toys), the first video game: Pong, and the invention of copy machines (Xerox 914 model). Each segment was between 3 and 6 minutes long and began with music unique to Modern Marvels. The episodes were in a narrative format based on a chronological look at the development of each item and how other items evolved from the original. For exam ple, the surfing episode showed the connections between surfing, skateboarding, and wind surfing. Each item examined was explored using an unseen narrator who guided the viewer through flashbacks, drawn renditions (cartoon like), and interviews with specialists in their fields or historians. There was clear progression through the stages of development of each item profiled with clear ending point being the modern device, tool, or toy. There was a clear integration of music with each episode. For example, during the history of surfing episode Hawaiian music played while drawings and photos of the first surfers and their boards were shown. The similarity and repetition (motif) in this episode was the music. The changes in the music changed as each new stage of development of an item was presented. Parallelism helped get the viewer ready for the next step of development. A change in music meant a move on to the next stage of development of the item. The variation of the motif was th e different kinds of music used. The music consisted of instrumentals with no voice (singing). This documentary series has unity and does not leave the viewer hanging at the end of the presentation. It has a logical beginning, uses the same narrator throughout, and ends at a logical point (modern item such as modern surfboard). As this documentary ages, it may appear to have disunity because the item profiled in the show may have further evolved. Say, for example, since the episode on surfing the boogie board was invented. Then the viewer of the surfing episode may be left hanging expecting the presentation of the boogie board next in the sequence of the episode.

Adolescent Sexuality Free Essays

string(64) " ways to show affection and begin to explore physical intimacy\." SEXUALITY OVERVIEW Most teens and pre-teens have a lot of questions about sex and sexuality. This is normal and natural. It also is normal to feel shy or embarrassed about raising these issues with adults or healthcare providers. We will write a custom essay sample on Adolescent Sexuality or any similar topic only for you Order Now Sexual development is an important part of health, similar to other measures of physical growth, such as height and weight. Sexual behavior, which is related to sexual development, has important health implications for everyone, and especially for teens. It is particularly important that to be well informed about all aspects of sex and sexual health. Some basic information on sex and sexuality is provided in this review, which may answer some questions and raise others. Find an adult you feel comfortable with — perhaps a healthcare provider, parent, or teacher — to discuss any questions or concerns you may have. SEXUALITY: WHAT IS IT? Human sexuality is more than just whether you are male or female, and it is more than just the act of sex. It is a complex idea that involves your physical make-up, how you think about yourself, and how you feel about others and the society you live in. Here are some of the things that contribute to sexuality: Anatomic sex — Anatomic sex refers to the sex organs with which you were born. That is, you are either a boy (with a penis and testicles) or a girl (with breasts, a uterus, vagina, and ovaries). Occasionally, a baby is born with sex organs that are not normally developed and/or may appear to resemble both sexes; these individuals are said to have ambiguous genitalia or to be intersex. Anatomic sex is only one component of sexuality. Gender identity — Gender identity relates to how you feel inside, and whether you â€Å"feel† like a boy or a girl. Most people have a combination of feelings, including some that are thought of as â€Å"male† or â€Å"masculine† and some that are thought of as â€Å"female† or â€Å"feminine†. In most cases, someone feels mostly like a boy or mostly like a girl. Gender identity and anatomic sex sometimes do not match. For example, a person can be born as a boy but feel like a girl. This is sometimes referred to as transgender. Sexual orientation — Once you begin puberty, you are likely to begin to have strong physical and emotional attractions to others. Sexual orientation refers to whether you are primarily attracted to people of the opposite sex (heterosexual), the same sex as you (homosexual, gay, or lesbian), or both (bisexual). Sexual orientation is influenced by many factors, including your anatomic sex, your gender identity, the society you live in, and other factors, some of which are not completely understood. Sexual orientation is believed to exist on a continuum. That is, you may feel mostly attracted to people of the same sex as you but still have some feelings for people of the opposite sex, or vice versa. These feelings are normal and may change throughout life. ADOLESCENT SEXUAL DEVELOPMENT Sexual development begins in the pre-teen years and continues into adulthood. The body produces hormones that cause outward changes, including breast development in girls, the appearance of facial hair in boys, and growth of hair under the arms and in the genital area of both boys and girls. However, puberty is more than physical changes. As your body grows into adulthood, your way of thinking, emotions, and wants and needs will change as well. The factors discussed above (your anatomic sex, your gender identity, and your sexual orientation) will all become a part of how these changes affect you as a person. You will probably start to feel strong attractions toward others. Sometimes these feelings include developing friendships with other teenagers. Other feelings include wanting to be physically close to another person. You may find yourself attracted to someone of the opposite sex, someone of the same sex, or both. It’s important to remember that these physical attractions can shift and change and that they develop at different times in different people. You may find you are attracted to someone of the same sex for a time, then find stronger attractions to someone of the opposite sex. Alternately, the reverse could occur. Over time, most teens will come to identify themselves as primarily heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual. However, you should not be surprised if you feel confused about some of these issues during your teen years. This time of life may be troubling for teens who begin to identify themselves as homosexual or bisexual, especially if these ideas are not openly accepted by family members, friends, or the society in which they live. In this case, it is especially important for the teen to find a trusted adult and friends with whom he or she can talk openly. Several of the online resources listed below can also be of benefit (see ‘Where to get more information’ below. It also is important to know that in the early years of puberty, it’s normal to want to experiment with sexual activity. This often happens before a teenager is fully aware of how this activity might affect his or herself or others. As teens continue to grow and mature, they are better able to make choices about intimacy and physical relationships that will enhance their lives, rather than making choices that will cause problems for themselves or others. Adults generally recommend that teens not rush into sexual activity too soon, but rather wait until they are more mature. (See ‘Health issues related to sex’ below. ) When you are sexually mature, you’ll have a more developed sense of your preferences and desires. You will understand the possible consequences of having sexual relationships with others, and you will be ready to take responsibility for whatever occurs. You will be more ready to engage in the satisfying, intimate relationships that are an important part of life. SEXUAL ACTIVITY: THE FACTS There are many ways to express intimacy. Spending time with another person, holding hands, and kissing are all ways to show affection and begin to explore physical intimacy. You read "Adolescent Sexuality" in category "Papers" As you develop attractions toward others, you will probably want to explore these and other types of physical intimacy. What might this involve? Most teens have questions about sex and sex acts. Here are some basic facts and definitions, including some important information about sexual boundaries; that is, what is and what is not OK as part of a sexual relationship. Genitals — Genitals are the external sex organs that are sensitive to and stimulated by being touched, which typically occurs during sexual activity. The male external organs are the penis and scrotum, which holds the testicles (figure 1). The female external organs are the vulva, clitoris, and the opening to the vagina (figure 2). Petting — Petting is feeling parts of another person’s body. This usually refers to touching the genitals or other sexually sensitive areas, such as breasts. Orgasm — Orgasm is an intensely pleasurable release of tension felt in the genital area and elsewhere in the body. It usually results from stimulation of the genitals. In men and boys, orgasm is associated with the release of semen (called ejaculation), which contains sperm. The term â€Å"come† is a slang word for orgasm. Sexual intercourse — In general, this refers to sex involving a man’s penis being placed inside a woman’s vagina. When the man ejaculates during sexual intercourse, this semen is released into the woman’s vagina. Pregnancy occurs if sperm, contained in the semen, are able to fertilize the egg released by a woman’s ovary. However, semen can be released even if the man does not have an orgasm. Oral sex — Oral sex involves using the mouth and/or tongue to stimulate the genitals. Oral sex can occur between a man and a woman, between two men, or between two women. Anal sex — Anal sex is sexual activity involving penetration of the anus (the opening where bowel movements leave the body). A penis or another object is inserted into the anus during anal sex. Both men and women are able to engage in anal sex. Masturbation — Masturbation involves using the hands, or sometimes a device such as a vibrator or other sex toy, to stimulate one’s own or someone else’s genitals. Some people believe â€Å"having sex† only means sexual intercourse. But other activities, including oral sex, anal sex, or masturbation can also be considered as â€Å"having sex†. Even things like kissing or petting are considered to be sexual activity because they are part of how one person responds sexually to another person. Sexual boundaries — The only kind of sexual activity that is OK is activity that occurs between people who want to have sex with each other. Activity that occurs when a person is alone, such as masturbation, is also OK. If two people are having sex, both of them must be old enough and mature enough to participate without feeling pressured to prove something or try something new. If a sex act is forced upon a person who does not want to participate, this is called rape. Rape is a serious crime that can result in being arrested, spending time in jail, and having a permanent criminal record. Having sex with someone who is not sure they want to have sex can also be called rape. For teens, feelings about sex can be new and confusing. For example, sometimes a person begins kissing or petting but then changes their mind and wants to stop. The other person must always listen, even if it is very difficult to stop. It is not harmful to stop sex before orgasm occurs. Teens sometimes get into difficult situations if they are drinking or using drugs and having sex. In these cases, someone may seem to want sex, but they may be too drunk or high to know what they are doing. Later, the sex can be called rape. Teens may be lured into having sex with an adult. It is never OK for an adult to behave in this way. If an adult wants to engage in any type of sexual activity (kissing, petting, oral sex, intercourse), the teen should talk to a parent, healthcare provider, law officer, or other trusted adult at once. Even if you feel like you have done something to cause the adult to be attracted or have sexual feelings, the adult is responsible for controlling his or her behavior, regardless of the circumstances. Certain state laws, which vary from state to state, impose certain regulations or rules on sexual activity, even among teens. As discussed above, it is always a crime for anyone to force or coerce you into having sex against your wishes, no matter if it is an adult or someone around your own age. However, in some states, sex between teens below a certain age may also be illegal, even if both people want to have sex. Rules may depend upon the age of both partners and upon the sex of your other partner(s). Before deciding to have sex, speak to a trusted adult about these important issues. HEALTH ISSUES RELATED TO SEX The main reason it is important to postpone sexual activity until you are mature is that sexual activity affects both the physical and emotional health of the people involved. Here are some facts. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) — There are a number of infections that can be spread during sexual activity. Infections can be spread through sexual intercourse, anal sex, oral sex, and using fingers, other body parts, or sex toys that have come in contact with another person’s genitals or body fluids. These diseases are called sexually transmitted infections, or STIs (often called sexually transmitted diseases, or STDs). Common places STIs can occur are the genital organs, anus, and throat. Research has shown that young people are at an increased risk of developing STIs. The reasons for this are not completely understood. However, the younger you are when you start having sex, the more likely it is that you will get an STI. Also, having one STI can make it easier to acquire other STIs at the same time. In many cases, you can get an STI and not know it. This is because STIs often do not have any noticeable signs or symptoms. All of the STIs can have serious consequences for future health. For example, a woman who gets an STI may have difficulty becoming pregnant later in life or may be more prone to developing certain types of cancer, such as cervical cancer. Some of the most important STIs are: HIV — HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is the virus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). AIDS is a serious, incurable disease of the immune system. Until recently, everyone who developed AIDS died. Although new treatments are now helping many people with HIV infection live longer, there is still no cure for this serious disease or vaccine to prevent it. Many people still die each year from AIDS. Each year, between 40,000 and 80,000 people are newly infected with HIV. Half of these new infections are in people younger than 25 years old. New recommendations call for those who have been sexually active to be tested routinely for HIV infection. The earlier HIV is detected, the sooner a person can obtain treatment and the better their chances are of survival. Speak to your healthcare provider about HIV testing. (See â€Å"Patient information: Testing for HIV†. ) Human papillomavirus — Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common STI in adolescents. Most people who get HPV do not know they have it. Some types of HPV cause genital warts. Other types of HPV cause cervical cancer in woman, penile cancer in men, and anal cancer in either sex. A Pap smear is one important way your healthcare provider can screen for cervical cancer associated with HPV. (See â€Å"Patient information: Condyloma (genital warts) in women† and â€Å"Patient information: Cervical cancer screening†. ) In addition, there is a vaccine for girls age 9 to 26 years to protect against four common types of HPV. Speak to your healthcare provider about this important vaccine. (See â€Å"Patient information: Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine†. ) Gonorrhea and chlamydia — These are serious bacterial infections of the genital tract. They can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women, which can cause severe pain and can lead to infertility (inability to become pregnant). Both gonorrhea and chlamydia can be cured with antibiotics. It is important to be screened for these infections if you have had sex, because you may not always have symptoms. (See â€Å"Patient information: Gonorrhea† and â€Å"Patient information: Chlamydia†. ) Herpes simplex virus — This is a viral infection that causes painful or itchy sores or blisters in the genital area. The sores heal but can reappear at any point later in life. There is no cure. The virus can be spread even when there are no blisters present. Medications are available from your healthcare provider to shorten the length of time the blisters last and decrease your risk of repeat outbreaks. (See â€Å"Patient information: Genital herpes†. ) Hepatitis B virus — This is a viral infection that can cause liver disease. In most cases, the disease resolves after the initial illness. But in some people, serious liver damage or liver failure can occur. Most children and adolescents are being vaccinated against this infection with a series of three shots. You should speak to your healthcare provider if you are not sure if you have had this vaccine. (See â€Å"Patient information: Hepatitis B†. ) Syphilis — This is an infection caused by a small organism called a spirochete (/SPY-ro-keet/), which can cause an ulcer on a person’s genitals or anus. It is fairly uncommon in teens but more common in certain populations. Sometimes you may not notice the ulcer, because it does not usually cause pain or may be on the inside of the vagina (in females) or anus (in both sexes). It is important to see your healthcare provider right away if you notice any sores or ulcers. The sore usually heals but can cause important long-term problems if untreated. Trichomonas — Trichomonas (â€Å"trich†) is a common infection caused by a tiny parasite that can cause itching and/or a discharge from a person’s genital organs. Females notice symptoms far more often than males, although both sexes can be affected and require treatment by a healthcare provider. This infection can be cured with antibiotics. PREVENTING AND SCREENING FOR STIS The only way to be sure you will not get an STI is to not have sex. STIs can be transmitted through sexual intercourse, oral sex, anal sex, and using fingers, other body parts, or sex toys that have come in contact with another person’s genitals or body fluids. STIs can be transmitted between a male and a female, between two females, and between two males who have sex. It is not possible to tell by looking at someone whether he or she has an STI. Even if the other person tells you they do not have an STI or says they are â€Å"clean†, you cannot be sure this is true. That is because the person may not know if they are infected. Also, it is common for teens to not be completely truthful about many things in relationships, including whether they may have been exposed to an STI. Condom use — People who are sexually active can reduce their risk of getting an STI by using a latex or polyurethane condom every time they have sex. Male condoms are worn on the penis, helping to prevent body fluids from passing to another person. Female condoms are also available, and can be placed in the vagina to help prevent fluids from passing from one person to another. (If a male and female are having sex, only one should wear a condom. If both the male and female wear a condom, the condoms could rub together and move out of place. ) Dental dams are another barrier device that can be used when performing oral sex on a female. (See â€Å"Patient information: Barrier methods of birth control†. ) Condoms and dental dams reduce the risk of getting an STI, but they do not take away the risk completely. Condoms can break or leak, allowing passage of body fluids and transmission of infection. In addition, condoms do not completely cover all of the skin that is exposed during sex; herpes and HPV can be passed by skin-to-skin contact. Other birth control methods do not reduce the risk of STIs. You can reduce the risk that a male condom will break or slip off in two ways. First, make sure the penis is completely hard before putting on the condom. Also, be sure to squeeze and hold the tip of the condom as you roll the rest of it down the penis, making sure there is no air pocket (like a small balloon) at the end of the penis. Immunizations — Another way to reduce the risk of two specific STIs (HPV and hepatitis B) is to talk to a healthcare provider about immunizations. As previously mentioned, most children and adolescents are routinely immunized against hepatitis B in the United States. The HPV vaccine is now available to females aged nine years and older. Check ups — Regular check-ups by your healthcare provider are important to all adolescents, but it is particularly important to speak with a healthcare provider if you decide to have sex. This talk should include ways to prevent pregnancy and STIs, as well as the need for regular testing for STIs, including HIV. Since STIs can occur in different body sites (genital organs, anus, and throat) and may have no symptoms, it is important to speak honestly with the provider about sexual behavior to get appropriate testing. If your healthcare provider is not comfortable or able to screen you for STIs, ask for a referral to a provider who can. Pregnancy and birth control — Pregnancy is a serious consequence of sexual activity between males and females. Each year in the United States, about 1 million adolescents become pregnant. Pregnancy in teens has serious health consequences. Pregnant teens are more likely to have babies who are premature or sick. A pregnant adolescent is more likely to drop out of school and live in poverty. Although some teens who become pregnant choose to have an abortion, this choice also carries risks. As with STIs, the only way a young woman can be sure she will not become pregnant is to not have sexual intercourse. There is no reliable way to determine a â€Å"safe† time when she will not become pregnant; menstrual cycles at this age can be irregular. Teens should know that pregnancy is possible each time they have sexual intercourse, including the first time and during the menstrual period. Birth control methods are available that can reduce the risk of pregnancy. However, birth control methods other than condoms do not reduce the risk of STIs. The most reliable methods (other than abstinence) must be prescribed by a doctor or nurse. These include birth control pills, patches, and injections. Other newer options for females include a vaginal ring that is worn in the vagina or a small device that must be inserted under the skin by a healthcare provider. (See â€Å"Patient information: Hormonal methods of birth control†. ) Some methods, such as condoms and contraceptive foam, can be purchased without a prescription. A condom should be used every time you have sex, even if another method is used to prevent pregnancy. (See â€Å"Patient information: Barrier methods of birth control†. ) If you use birth control but have an accident (the condom breaks, you forget a pill), you can take a â€Å"morning after pill† to reduce the risk of pregnancy. (See â€Å"Patient information: Emergency contraception (morning after pill)†. ) Teens who engage in sexual activity must be sure they have accurate information about the available birth control options. The best time to decide on a method of birth control is before you start having sex. How to cite Adolescent Sexuality, Papers

afghanistan karzai essays

afghanistan karzai essays Dear brothers and sisters, the representatives of the bereaved nation of Afghanistan; Dear guests, members of the diplomatic corps Assalamu alaikum, may peace be upon you. I have some wonderful news and some concerning regarding the status of your country through my leadership as your president. As you may have known in my past, I have loyally served my country through the Soviet attempt of occupation and have succeeding and assisting my compatriots in freeing our country. I left Kabul in 1994 for Qandahar, due to the internal strife among the various factions. While in Qandahar, I was approached by my former colleagues from the Afghan resistance against the Soviets, to free Qandahar from the menace of warlordism, factionalism, and oppression. Thus, with the assistance of the local inhabitants and the Taliban this objective was achieved. However, in mid 1995 I parted with the Taliban movement, since they were gravitating towards extremism and negative foreign influence. In 1996, with the Taliban in control of Kabul, I was offered the post of their representative to the United Nations. Hamid Karzai rejected the Talibans offer, and instead devoted all my efforts towards the convening of an Emergency Loya Jirga, under the auspices of His Majesty, Mohammed Zaher, the Former King of Afghanistan. With me as one of the principal organizers, the Loya Jirga movement received an important impetus and in October 1997, an Intra-Afghan Dialogue Process was launched in Istanbul, Turkey. The movement sought to provide the Afghan people the opportunity to determine their right to self-determination in accordance to their free will. Following meetings of the Intra-Afghan Dialogue Process in Frankfurt and Bonn, Germany in July 1998, the focus of activity was shifted to Rome, Italy in 1999. Experience Vs. Qualification Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4250 words

Experience Vs. Qualification - Essay Example This misconception is not correct that experience matters more than qualification. Qualified graduates need not dishearten in the absence of experience. Accredited qualification helps in offering plenty of job opportunities; it is true for all streams of study, for example taking the stream of Town Planning in which every year 2000 students get graduated from universities with an RTPI-accredited planning degree (Parkes, 2011). Graduates stand more chances of selection by using various recruitment channels rather than depending solely on traditional methods. Students can no more depend on campus recruitment alone. Lack of experience should not discourage graduates. Some of the suggestions for getting jobs are graduation include: 1. Networking these days has become critical for getting recruited, as only one in five jobs are advertised. In the planning job scenario, the young planners’ network group which held even a speed networking event in Birmingham, could be the best platform for meeting the like-minded audience, prospective employers and create links that help in off-campus recruitment. 2. Graduate students need to maintain high level of awareness on current affairs and possess an insight of the policy decisions related to their subject taken by the government at various levels. It can provide an edge over others in the recruitment process. 3. Due to lack of experience, getting a job becomes additionally arduous task. Ideal way is to offer help to prove your calibre; it can realise in bigger gains. Initially, an employer could be unwilling to offer a permanent job but afterwards may find the services offered by the graduate indispensable to the organisation and could materialise in job offering; it has happened in many cases. 4. Lookout for the organisation that could offer you your dream job. Locate the person doing that dream job, and request their time to guide you on getting where they are today. Such people can offer better advice as they had been in similar position where a graduate finds himself. Chances of getting that dream job could brighten if your dream job is advertised and that guide recalls you to offer that opportunity. 5. Widen your knowledge circumference and work experience to be called for the waiting opportunity amid economic downturn and job competition. Your passion for the job to the prospective employers should be clearly visible while you are still amidst your study. Offer yourself to be a volunteer to charities and community organisations to lead their projects. The RTPl website can provide required assistance pertaining to recruitment agencies and guidance from those who have overseas experience, which can be worked out for getting a competitive edge (Parkes, 2011). Has Television Taken Over Photography?

Has Television Taken Over Photography? In the age of television and internet streaming videos, photography is no longer as pervasive a tool of social control as it used to be. Its golden age is now over, since it flourished and died along with the great dictatorships of the 20th Century. In fact, the most eloquent examples of the use of photography as a means to seduce people and annihilate their ability of a critical analysis of reality (in order to submit their will to the goals of a governing elite) can be found in the period between the 1920’s and the 1950’s. It was in such period that the fascist, nazi, and communist propaganda saw in photographers the perfect craftsmen who could transform images, often fake or posed, into messages to convey a particular information about what was going on in their country. In Italy, it was through the pictures taken by anonymous photographers that Benito Mussolini managed to give the people the idea of being part of a great nation, where everybody (intellectuals, sport smen, the Church, the unions, the common men) were proud to demonstrate their faith in the fascist regime[1]. It was through them that he was able to depict the country as a plentiful land, led by a good-hearted man embodying the virtues of the great Roman emperors. Most of those photographers were working for the same institution, the Istituto Luce, a formally independent organism that was actually controlled by the fascist regime. Its purpose was to operate as a modern news agency, but any proof of the disastrous economic and social conditions of many areas of Italy (such as Sicily, Veneto or Sardinia) was withdrew from the press. So, there were no news, if they had to be bad news. Another example of Mussolini’s attempt at distorting reality was the photographic book Italia imperiale (Imperial Italy), published in 1937. The author, Manilo Morgagni, wrote a visual elegy of the virtues of the dictator. In the same period, Adolf Hitler was making a similar use of photography in Germany, especially thanks to the collaboration of Leni Riefenstahl, who later would become one of the most famous artists of the world. The book Schoenheit im Olympischen Kampf (Beauty in the Olympic games), published in 1938, was a collection of her shots of the German youth, taken during the Olympic Games held in Berlin in 1936; it was an instrument of Hitler’s propaganda aimed at celebrating the perfect bodily features that only the pure Aryan race could boast[2]. In this way, German population was given an amount of visual messages that confirmed the superiority of their race, so that there was no questioning about the crimes their leader was committing in foreign countries. On the other hand, Hitler wie ihn keiner kennt (The unknown Hitler) was an homage to the Furher from his personal photographer, Heinrich Hoffmann, and was completely dedicated to him and his private life. It showed a leader ca ressing children and enjoying mountain resorts, depicting him as father and protector on the nation. In the USSR, Iosif Stalin reduced the avant-garde photographer Aleksandr Rodchenko to a mere instrument to convey the perfection of a state working in the best imaginable way, where every movement was preordained and nothing could go wrong. In fact, the usual subjects of Rodchenko were military parades and public meetings, during which everybody had a specific role to play and a proper place to fit in[3]. Moreover, Stalin made a wide use of photomontage to insert his figure in all the topic moments of the October Revolution of 1917, so that the people were induced to think that it was him who actively participated and fought in the process that led to the creation of a land that was supposedly governed by them. Another famous example of the way photography and its manipulation were used to attain the consent of the people is the picture taken by Yevgeny Khaldei in Berlin on May 2nd, 1945. It is the image of a soldier of the Red Army raising the communist flag on the roof of the Reich stag[4]. Since Khaldei arrived too late, when the action had already been accomplished, he asked a soldier to repeat it in order to fix the moment on film, and give Russian population another proof of the power of their leader. Further east, Mao Tse-tung was acting in the same way, one of his preferred photographers being Li Zenghshen, who took also many shots of the atrocities committed by the regime but hid them until the late Nineties, when he thought it was safe to show them to the public without risking to be prosecuted by the communist regime. The above mentioned examples are taken from the major dictatorships of the past century; nonetheless in the 1930’s the greatest democracy of the world, the USA, had a similar approach to photography, although lacking the militaristic vision of the country that characterised the totalitarian regimes. The American government did not make a wide and evident use of photography to make its citizens agree on its political and financial behaviour, but in some occasions documentary images were used as proofs of the necessity of its decisions. The Farm Security Administration, for instance, was founded in 1935 by president Franklin Delano Roosevelt as part of his New Deal program aimed at rescuing the nation after the great depression of 1929. Its goal was to relieve the rural populations from their poverty and many famous photographers (Russell Lee, Jack Delano, Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans among the others) were hired to document their situation, in order to inform about it people li ving in the urban areas. But this project was also meant to provide a visual justification on how and why the government was spending public money, preventing any questioning by the richest part of the population[5]. The best output of this policy was a book compiled by Archibald McLeish, titled Land of the free and published in 1938. In the meanwhile, another way to use photography in order to exert social control was beginning to see the light in the USA. But this one was completely different from the propaganda experienced in Europe, since it was focused on not showing, rather than on showing. It is the case of the 216 nuclear tests held by the Army between 1945 and 1962 (in the desert in the state of Nevada or in the middle of the Pacific Ocean). They were documented by anonymous officials mainly through aerial photography, but the pictures were kept in secret archives till very recently, because the government thought that such experiments might arise doubts in public opinion about nuclear power and the cold war[6]. This attitude quickly developed and expanded to the majority of the nations, prompting governments to prevent their people from looking at what might endanger their consent. A form of undeclared censorship has been watching over photography all the time, and war reporters have been its principal t argets. One of the most recent and outstanding case is the story occurred to a now famous picture taken by Kenneth Jarecke during the first Gulf War (1991). He shot the body of an Iraqi soldier, burnt to a cinder by American bombing while he was retreating with his troop on the Basra road[7]. This picture was published abroad but not in the USA until the war was definitively over, since it might counter the Pentagon’s notion of a technological a war amended of all the atrocities of the previous ones. Nonetheless, nowadays television has taken over the role that was played by photography, and it has become the principal tool to exert social control. Probably, this function is still accomplished by photography only through commercials, but in this case the aim is altering people’s perception of reality in order to influence their needs. The most interesting aspect of this function is that who is sending the message to the public usually does not depict a fake situation as it were real, nor does hide a particular side of it. Most commercials evoke a hypertechnological world or a lost one, like in Marlboro Country’s advertisements, where values and lifestyle are as simple and good as in the good old days[8]. Two opposite worlds that have just one feature in common: they can be reached through the product advertised. This kind of social control is very different from that exercised through propaganda and censorship, but it must be noted that its target is not the citizen as a political individual, but the consumer as a participant in the local and global market. Moreover, there is not such a monopoly of the mass media as the one that is proper of a governing institution, but all the organs emitting messages to control the public are constantly competing against each other to be most visible. Consequently, this particular use of photography requires bigger and more accessible platforms wherefore communicate, such as glossy, fancy magazines and huge city billboards. Early Puritan and Pilgrim Literature Essay

The Puritans and the Pilgrims both migrated to North America to escape religious persecution due to their views about the Church of England. They created very little literature because writing was viewed as satanic in both cultures. All that was written in Puritan New England were works to glorify God and record journeys for historical purposes. The most famous poets of this period include Anne Bradstreet and Edward Taylor. William Bradford, the governor of the Plymouth Colony, kept a journal of the events that took place on the journey over on the Mayflower and life within the colony. Jonathan Edwards, a minister during the Great Awakening wrote the sermon â€Å"Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.† These authors illustrated the following religious beliefs in their works: natural depravity, irresistible grace, and unconditional election. Puritans believed that all men sinned and that all men were of an evil nature. Ministers instructed them to search their souls for sins and ask God for forgiveness. In the 1730’s and 1740’s the Puritan religion began to lose followers. Several ministers went to extreme measures to get their followers to adhere to the teaching in the Bible more sternly. â€Å"There are in the souls of wicked men those hellish principles reigning, that would presently kindle and flame out into hell fire, if it were not for God’s restraints.†(101). The prior excerpt demonstrates the natural depravity of men. Puritans were instructed to frequently search through their souls for instances of which they had done evil doings. The act of constant soul searching wore many puritans down and caused them to convert to a different faith while others were driven in to a psychotic state. Edwards also stated that â€Å"Your wickedness makes you as it were heavy as lead and to tend downwa rds with great weight and pressure towards Hell;†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (103). The passage refers to the wickedness of men. Hearing every Sunday that you possess natural wickedness which drags you down towards hell is one of the reasons the Puritan faith became unpopular and eventually died out. In his sermon, he also stated â€Å"So that thus it is, that natural men are held in the hand of God over the pit of Hell; they have deserved the fiery pit, and are already sentenced to it;†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (103). Edwards and other preachers of the Great Awakening depict God as an angry and cruel man and end up losing many followers of the Puritan faith in the end as members of the faith viewed God as mean and inhumane and  they felt he was inaccessible to them. Another Puritan belief that was prominently displayed in their literature was unconditional election. Unconditional election states that God decides whether a man will go to heaven or hell before he or she is even born. The poet, Anne Bradstreet illustrates the theme in her poem â€Å"Upon the Burning of Our House† â€Å"And, when I could no longer look,/ I blest His name that gave and took,/ That laid my goods no in the dust:/ Yea so it was, and so ’twas just./ It was his own: it was not mine;/ Far be it that I should repine.†(53). This example states that even though her house and earthly possessions are ruined she can take comfort in the fact that the Lord has a house waiting for her in heaven. In another one of her poems,† To My Dear and Loving Husband†, Anne represents the same theme â€Å"Thy love is such I can no way repay;/ The heavens reward thee manifold, I pray./ Then while we live, in love let’s so persever,/ That when we live no more we may live ever.† (51). Edward Taylor, another poet of the colonial era, writes poem in the mindset of being one of the unconditionally elect. He states in the poem â€Å"Huswifery† â€Å"Then cloath therewith mine Understanding, Will,/ Affections, Judgment, Conscience, Memory/ My Words, and Actions, that their shine may fill/ My wayes with glory and thee glorify./ Then mine apparel shall display before yee./ (70). Taylor proclaims he is asking God to clothe him in knowledge of the next life and that he believes he is of the unconditionally elect for asking for this understanding. Yet another reoccurring theme in the writings of the puritans was irresistible grace. Irresistible grace states men survive by the grace of God. William Bradford uses this theme many times in his account of the Pilgrims journey to the new world titled Of Plymouth Plantation. Bradford wrote, â€Å"But herewith they broke their mast in three pieces and their sail fell overboard in a bery grown sea, so as they had like to have been cast away. Yet by God’s mercy they recovered themselves, and having the flood with them struck into the harbor.†(34). He indicates that the Pilgrims were at the mercy of God and by his grace they found the harbor and survived. Bradford later refers to an instance when some Pilgrims were exploring the  area around a possible camp site. â€Å"Men, Indians! Indians!† And withal, their arrows came flying amongst them. Their men ran with all speed to recover their arms, as by the good providence of God they did.† (33). Here Bradford glorifies God for allowing the Pilgrims to get to their weapons before them all fell victims to the arrows of the Indians. Bradford greatens the name of God once more in the account of John Howland. â€Å"†¦as they thus lay in a mighty storm, a lusty young man called John Howland, coming upon some occasion above the gratings was, with a seele of the ship, was thrown into sea; but it pleased God he caught hold of the topsail halyards†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (28). Unlike the man who feel overboard and drowned, for taunting the sick and poor, John Howland had the graces of God extended to him and was rescued from the stormy waters. Throughout the Colonial Age Puritans and Pilgrims emphasized three major themes in their literature. They wrote of irresistible grace, the natural depravity existing in all of man kind, and predestination for those among the unconditionally elect. Three writers of the period, Bradstreet, Taylor, and Bradford, use their works to glorify God and announce themselves among the unconditionally elect. The fourth, Jonathan Edwards wrote a sermon in an attempt to scare followers in to the more strict puritans ways of past in an attempt to save the religion.

Short Story - 847 Words

With such a sheltered life, every detail of their path practically drawn for the two siblings forced to walk, it was a wonder the two had had any mental stability left at all. To comprehend what was correct to do or even how to have grasped a job without the codependency of their parents. Maybe the praying had worked that Eve had occasionally did when they had finally found freedom, then again, her mind constantly wondered if she was actually asking God who resided in the Bible, or God who was her keeper for eighteen years. But then again, did it really matter? Did prayers matter or was someone else answering anything she silently asked when on her knees? If she could have chose a God or two to answer, it would have been the kind old†¦show more content†¦Letting her crawl to the side of the bed more then with bright eyes. Such a new experience for the two of them it had been overwhelming. Swallowing suddenly, Eve blinked in thought, watching up at her brother with a thoughtful expression before finally speaking. Well ask them, Adam... surely they would have to understand this. Not the killing, maybe the killing. No, not the killing. Too sweet, too kind. She shook her head and blinked to silence her head again for the moment. Well talk to them, tell them we need to get away for a bit. There isnt a need to worry them... well.... Her thoughts swirled before she reached out to grasp at one of his hands, her fingers ever so softly rubbing on his in comfort. We would be protecting them Adam, from Him.. them. What if he was to gain more power and it somehow hurt Jerry and Betty? Could we ever look at them the same, if we had a chance to at least try? Her feet shifted, drawing to dangle over the edge of the bed, still holding his one hand in her own while staring up at Adam so sweetly despite the words that left her next. And no, we havent killed anyone before, but we can always try. What if its easy? It always looks so easy on those shows, and.. and his cops always do it when they need to.
